NSF IRES China 2017

Week 3

July 9th 2017

Today was a rest day. The group rested and did personal activities.

Today begins our third week. We were at the lab today and working on a couple simulation. The simulations were a 2-D MOSFET and p-n junction. Though it was a little challenging since we were using another part of the Sentaurus Software, the Structure Editor.

July 11th 2017

Today we finished up our 2-D MOSFET and p-n junction. And had a lecture on how to build 3-D structures in Sentaurus Workbench while only using code. Then we spent the rest of the afternoon trying to build a 3-D MOSFET using only code.

We spent another day in the lab. Today we continued to try and use only code to produce a 3-D MOSFET. Many of us had some trouble trying to imagine a structure in 3-D and then converting it into code. In the afternoon, we spent some time trying to implement some doping on the structure while only using code.

Today was a day to explore. First, we visited the Tsinghua University Art Museum and spent our morning exploring the history of Tsinghua as well as China. All of us really marveled at ancient architecture as it resembled puzzle pieces that were put together to create incredible structures. Then we grabbed a quick lunch and headed off to the mall to go catch a movie. The movie we ended up watching was Despicable Me 3. All of us got a kick out of how their large popcorn was about the size of a small popcorn in the US. Afterwards, we then biked to another mall as it was already evening and went to go eat hotpot. We all had a great feast with the host students, Weijun and Linyuan, and by the end of the meal all of us were so stuffed.

Today was another exciting sightseeing day as we went to visit the Forbidden City. We came to know that it was named the Forbidden City as it was forbidden for commoners to enter the place. As we explored we visited the Hall of Central Harmony which was where the emperor reviewed ceremonial addresses before he would hold court or ceremonies. Following the Hall of Central Harmony, we came upon the Hall of Preserving Harmony, were the emperor would host grand banquets or used it as a hall to change his attire. Next, we reached the Palace of Heavenly Purity which is the structure in which the emperor resided and dealt with state matters. As we continued along we reached the Hall of Union which named for the relation between heaven and earth and the harmony between yin and yang. This place was used by the empress to receive homage or by the emperor to store his imperial seals. After, this we reached our final stop which was the Imperial Garden which was very lovely and had a serene atmosphere.

Today we began our day by hopping onto the subway and heading over to Olympic Park. As we reached the venue we got to experience the massive size that it held. We proceeded to the Birds Nest and got to spectate the track and what a breathtaking view it was even from the 5th floor. All of us could only imagine how this stadium must have been during the summer Olympics. We then proceeded to descend and reached the first floor where Rachel succumbed to the temptations and went to get a picture on the track. Afterwards, we proceeded to explore around the park for the morning. As we came to the afternoon we went to the China Science and Technology Museum. Although the museum was interesting a lot of felt it was for younger people as a lot of the attractions were interactive, but more at an elementary level. We then proceed to a nearby mall to grab a bite to eat before we ended our day.
