Diary June 23, 2010

Today was a very long day. We arrived at Beijing Airport just before 5am, and after an hour to pass through customs and collect our bags, we were collected by Dr. Wang and Peng (our lead host graduate student) to be taken to the university by a university bus. Once we arrived, we received our room keys and settled into our dormitory rooms. We met our three main host students, all microelectronics graduate students: Peng, Feng, and Sparkle.

We just barely put our things down when it was time to leave again, this time to the cafeteria for breakfast. The cafeteria is a hustling, bustling place where the attendants slap their card readers in impatience if you take too long, and the food is cheap.

The rest of the day was spent getting settled in and finishing paperwork. We rented bikes for our stay, we bought meal cards to pay for the food, we exchanged our American currency for Chinese yuan, and we bought our internet plans.

The day ended with a large group dinner: the four of us and several Chinese students. The dozen or so of us sat around a large table, in the middle of which was a large rotating glass disk. The waiters would constantly bring us new dishes and place them on the disk. We could then turn the disk to our pleasure and eat whatever passes by.

At the end, we're very tired. Jet lag has finally caught up, and it's time to turn in for the day. More pictures and experiences in the future.
