Farewell Dinner

Our last full day in China! Time really flies when you're having fun. For our last sightseeing trip, this morning we took the bus over to the local museum. We saw an exhibit about the history of porcelain which had many ceramic works from the past. There was also an exhibit about evolution containing skulls of early humans and other skeleton artifacts about human evolution found in China. We also got to see the an exhibit about the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng, and it was full of cultural relics such as ritual vessels, musical instruments, and weaponry. Once we returned back to our apartments, we spent the rest of the day packing and cleaning our rooms so we could check out. In the evening we met up with everyone and had a formal farewell dinner at an on campus restaurant. We enjoyed a grand assortment of traditional and local foods while engaging in conversation about our goals for the future. We thanked our hosts one last time for all that they had done for us, and walked back to our apartment. Since it was our last night in Wuhan, we decided to spend the rest of the night at the tea shop to play one last game of Uno together with Dian, Jiao, and Art. We also made a new friend at the tea shop, and we invited her to join in on our Uno game. Our epic 9 vs. 9 brawl lasted about two and a half hours, and after an intense match Guthrie came out on top and beat us all. We stayed at the tea shop until it closed, then we returned to our apartments to get some rest for our trip back home.

NSF Presentation and KTV

This afternoon we were visited by Nancy Sung, the head of the NSF Beijing Office. We had created a powerpoint detailing all of our experiences in Shanghai and Wuhan, and we spent most of our morning preparing for our presentation. We went over to the lab to set up the projector and waited nervously for her to arrive. Once she arrived, we introduced ourselves and talked for a while before our presentation. She was very friendly, and we became more relaxed after talking for some time. After we gave our presentation, we had a discussion about our experiences in China. We talked about the different challenges we dealt with such as difficulty in communicating, and Dian, Jiao, and Art expressed the challenges they faced while hosting us for a month.

Afterwards we returned to our apartments and met up again in the evening to sing karaoke once again. We all sang our hearts out as it was the last KTV experience we would have in China. One of the staff told us if we earned a score of 90% or better on a song, we would be given a free fruit platter. This wasn't a game anymore. We had to get that fruit platter at all costs. With food on the line, we all stepped up our game and did our best to score well. Eventually Jiao saved the day by scoring a 92%, and we rejoiced and enjoyed some delicious watermelon.

Movies Round 2

Earlier in the week, Dian and Jiao had purchased movie tickets for us to see Ice Age: Collision Course in 3D, so we met up at the tea shop and waited for our movie start time. When we first went to the movies, we bought the tickets the day of and had to sit separately as a result. This time we planned ahead, and we got seats in the middle of the theater instead of the front like before. The movie was very funny, and we got a kick out of astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson's appearance in the film. After the movie, we walked around the mall for a bit before returning to campus to continue work on our presentation.

Boost Converter Design

Instead of heading over to the lab we did our lab work on campus at a cafe today. Dian introduced us to a new project about designing a boost converter; a DC to DC power converter that steps up voltage from its input to its output. The project also involved developing a PID controller to control the duty cycle of the pulses sent to the transistor gate. We spent the day doing circuit analysis in order to obtain a control to output transfer function to begin developing our PID controller. We also spent some time creating a powerpoint for our presentation later this week.
